1. Acceptance of Terms

By downloading, installing, or using the Splitsies mobile application ("the App"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the App.

These Terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you and Splitsies ("we," "us," or "our").

Plain English: By using Splitsies, you're agreeing to these rules. They're here to keep things fair for everyone.

2. Description of Service

Splitsies (Bundle ID: uk.splitsies.app) is a mobile application available on iOS and Android that allows users to:

  • Create and split shared expenses among friends and groups
  • Track balances and settlements between users using multiple split methods (equal, percentage, exact, or item-based)
  • Scan receipts using optical character recognition (OCR) for automatic item extraction (premium feature)
  • Convert expenses between 30+ currencies
  • Create placeholder entries for friends who have not yet joined Splitsies
  • Simplify debts between multiple parties

Splitsies is a tool for tracking shared expenses and is not a financial services provider, payment processor, or money transfer service. The App facilitates record-keeping of shared costs but does not process, hold, or transfer any funds.

3. Account Registration

To use Splitsies, you must create an account. When registering, you agree to:

  • Be at least 13 years of age (or the minimum age required in your country of residence)
  • Provide accurate, current, and complete information during registration
  • Maintain the security of your account credentials and not share your login details with others
  • Notify us promptly of any unauthorized access to your account
  • Accept responsibility for all activity that occurs under your account

You may register using an email address and password, or through third-party authentication providers (Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In).

4. Acceptable Use

You agree to use Splitsies only for its intended purpose of tracking shared expenses. You may not:

  • Use the App for any fraudulent, illegal, or unauthorized purpose
  • Create fake accounts, impersonate other users, or misrepresent your identity
  • Abuse, harass, or threaten other users through the App
  • Attempt to access, scrape, or extract data from the App or its services by automated means
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any part of the App
  • Interfere with or disrupt the App's infrastructure, servers, or networks
  • Use the App to record or track expenses for money laundering, tax evasion, or other illegal financial activity
  • Upload malicious content, including viruses or harmful code, through receipt images or other input methods

We reserve the right to investigate and take appropriate action against anyone who violates these rules, including suspending or terminating accounts.

5. Subscriptions and Payments

Splitsies offers both free and premium tiers. Premium features (such as receipt scanning with OCR and item-level splitting) are available through a paid subscription.

In-App Purchases

Premium subscriptions are purchased through Apple's App Store or Google's Play Store as in-app purchases. All payment processing is handled entirely by Apple or Google -- we do not collect, store, or process your payment card details.

Auto-Renewal

Subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each billing period (monthly or yearly) unless you cancel before the renewal date. You will be charged through your App Store or Play Store account.

Cancellation

You may cancel your subscription at any time through your device's app store settings (Apple: Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions; Google: Play Store > Subscriptions). Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period -- you will retain access to premium features until then.

Refunds

Refund requests are handled by Apple or Google in accordance with their respective refund policies. Please contact Apple Support or Google Play Support directly for refund inquiries.

Note: We may change subscription pricing from time to time. Any price changes will be communicated in advance and will not affect your current billing period.

6. Intellectual Property

The Splitsies app, including its design, code, graphics, logos, interface elements, and all other content created by us, is owned by Splitsies and protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws.

We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the App for its intended purpose, subject to these Terms.

Your data remains yours. You retain full ownership of all expense data, receipt images, group information, and any other content you create within the App. We claim no ownership over your data.

7. User Content

You are solely responsible for the data you enter into Splitsies, including but not limited to:

  • Expense names, descriptions, and amounts
  • Receipt images uploaded for OCR processing
  • Group names and descriptions
  • Placeholder friend entries (names, email addresses, phone numbers)
  • Profile information (name, username, avatar)

You agree not to enter content that is offensive, defamatory, illegal, or that infringes on the rights of others. While expense data is typically factual in nature, we reserve the right to remove content that violates these Terms.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties

Splitsies is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

Specifically:

  • Not financial advice: Splitsies is an expense tracking tool, not a financial advisor. We do not provide financial, tax, or legal advice. Always verify calculations independently.
  • Calculation accuracy: While we strive for precision (using integer-cent arithmetic), you should verify important financial calculations independently. Splitsies is not liable for rounding differences or calculation errors.
  • OCR accuracy: Receipt scanning uses AI-powered optical character recognition, which may not always produce perfect results. Always review and verify OCR-extracted data before confirming expenses.
  • Currency conversion: Exchange rates are sourced from publicly available data and may not reflect real-time market rates. Conversions are approximate and should not be relied upon for precise financial transactions.
  • Availability: We do not guarantee uninterrupted access to the App. Service may be temporarily unavailable due to maintenance, updates, or circumstances beyond our control.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Splitsies and its operators, directors, employees, and agents shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to:

  • Loss of profits, data, or business opportunities
  • Financial disputes between users arising from expense splitting or settlement tracking
  • Errors or inaccuracies in OCR scanning, currency conversion, or expense calculations
  • Unauthorized access to your account resulting from your failure to maintain account security
  • Service interruptions or data loss

Important: Splitsies is an expense tracking tool that helps record shared costs. The actual settlement of debts between users is a private matter between those users. We are not responsible for ensuring that debts are paid, disputes are resolved, or that users honour their obligations to one another.

In no event shall our total liability to you exceed the amount you have paid us in subscription fees during the twelve (12) months preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or fifty pounds sterling (GBP 50.00), whichever is greater.

10. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to Splitsies at any time, with or without notice, if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms or engaged in conduct that is harmful to other users, the App, or third parties.

You may delete your account at any time by contacting us at privacy@splitsies.uk. Upon account deletion, your personal data will be permanently removed in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Upon termination, your right to use the App ceases immediately. Any provisions of these Terms that by their nature should survive termination (including, but not limited to, intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and governing law) shall survive.

11. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will:

  • Update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page
  • Notify users through the App or via email for significant changes

Your continued use of Splitsies after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms. If you do not agree to the updated Terms, you should stop using the App and delete your account.

12. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales, United Kingdom, without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

Any disputes arising under or in connection with these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
